Learning to live with less isn’t always easy. This is especially true for people in the lower socio-economic strata. There are a number of social and environmental changes happening in the current climate that can make it difficult to live as well as we’d like. The environmental education research studies can give us a glimpse into the types of things we can do to help ourselves and the environment, and offer a few tactics to help make our everyday environments a little better.
The research studies (like the one we mentioned earlier) ask subjects to think about the ways they influence their environment. For example, a group of subjects might be asked to think about how they feel when they see or smell a certain smell, or how they feel when they see or touch a certain object. Researchers also examine the subjects’ behavior to see if they act in ways that are conducive to their environment.
This is a great way to get interested in environmental education, and to learn to think about the environment in a different way. If we were to ask our neighbors to think about the differences between how they feel when they see or touch their cat, or about how they feel when they see or smell their dog, we would have a pretty good idea of the differences between the two situations.
One of the things that can really help with this is the use of “experimentation.” We often hear of this phrase being used for science, but in environmental education it is often used to describe a more open attitude, in which students, parents, or other members of the community can ‘experiment’ with activities that are designed to help them understand the environment in a new way.
This might seem like a little bit of a contradiction to me, but in reality this can be a good thing. For some new environments, it may be a bit of a relief to have the people there know how to use new things. For others, it may be a bit of a big drag because they’re already having to use the same thing in different environments.
The environment we are looking at in this video is a part of the world known as the “Prairie Creek Complex.” It is located in the city of West Plains, near the city of Eureka. The people there are the folks who help keep this place clean, and they can take part in this experiment by giving students the chance to have a go at cleaning a lake they have built. This lake is a great example of how we can think about the environment in new ways.
