While the board of education is the school district in New York State, it is the board of education in the state of Maryland. The two are both elected in their respective state legislatures.
I’m not sure about you, but I don’t think we’d have any idea what we’d be doing if we were on the board of education in New York. As a matter of fact, I think we would probably be way too bored to be doing anything interesting.
The school board in New York is a lot like the school board in Maryland, except that the state of New York has a different governor and the state of Maryland has a different governor. Just about the only time I see the two compared is when the state legislatures are talking about the next round of budget cuts. In New York state, the governor appoints the members of the board, and the members of the board appoint the superintendent.

Sounds like a lot of responsibility. You have to budget every year, and you have to do that yourself. This is certainly true in some schools, but not all.
I’ve always said that the easiest way to get the most out of the system is to not take any of the votes. I’m not suggesting you get any of the votes that are actually needed by your own group or the other citizens. I think the only way to get the votes is to do the best you can with the votes you get. That’s why it’s so important that you have an organization with a clear vision of what you want the most.
