The best way for you to find the right professional is to ask around. I have found the best match for me was a counselor from a school I attended. They were able to answer many of my questions and really helped me explore my feelings, thoughts, and behaviors in a safe environment.

For a good example of just how good it is to be in the same boat as someone, just ask yourself this: If you were in the same situation as a patient suffering from serious mental illness, what would you do? Would you call the doctor? Would you try to find a psychiatrist who could help you? Would you look up some therapists that specialize in the treatment of mental illness and see if they might be a good fit? I would think that you would do all of these things.
