The truth is that we all tend to become quite self-aware, in some ways. It’s not a bad thing! We all fall into a kind of “I can do this,” “I can do that,” or “I don’t know” mindset. I’m referring to the mindset wherein we think we know how we should feel, think, feel, think, feel, feel, etc.
When we’re just doing it right, we can take control, but when we become so self-aware it’s very difficult to take control. Then we can become passive, like a kid waiting to grow up, stuck in that I know how you should feel, I know how you should feel, I dont know how you should feel, where are you going? kind of thing.
We all want to feel that we know what we want. We all want to have control over our thoughts and feelings. In fact, we all want to be in control. But we are not.
Self-awareness isn’t simply about taking the next step from one belief to another. It’s about how you think, feel, and act in your own life and how you think, feel, and act in the world around you. For instance, you may believe that you have to be more active in your work life, but if you think about it, you know that you should be more passive, because you don’t need to be the boss of everything.
That’s why we often hear the phrase, “self-awareness is knowing who you are.” In reality, it is knowing what you want to be. In fact, it is having the desire to become what you want to be.
A person with self-awareness takes the time to learn what she wants to be and sets an example for others.
It is important to have a desire to be something we can be proud of, but to do so we need to know what that is. Self-awareness is knowing who you are. It is the act of being yourself.
